VP/HR — Situation of the inhabitants of the Choucha refugee camp

Question for written answer E-004573-16
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Marina Albiol Guzmán (GUE/NGL)

The UN has closed its refugee camp in Choucha (Tunisia) but dozens of people who fled the war in Libya continue to live there in the facilities left behind by the UN. These people have been abandoned by the UN, which has left the camp, and by the Tunisian authorities, which refuse to recognise them as refugees. They are in a very precarious state, being located far from resources of any kind, and at risk of being attacked.

1. Is the Vice-President/High Representative aware of this situation?

2. Being apprised of the situation, will she fulfil her international obligation to assist the people still living in the facilities abandoned by the UN?

3. Has she brought the extreme vulnerability of these people to the table in bilateral talks with the Republic of Tunisia, or will she do so?
