Quail farming conditions

Question for written answer E-004878-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Sophie Montel (ENF) , Florian Philippot (ENF)

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) France has highlighted unacceptable practices in quail farming. 140 million quail are farmed in Europe every year, primarily for their meat. Sold as luxury products, quail and quails' eggs are generally the product of an industrial system which has no consideration for quail welfare. Crammed into overcrowded buildings or tiny cages, quail do not have sufficient space to manifest natural behaviours. These practices must therefore be abolished as a matter of urgency, especially given the existence of alternatives.

How will the Commission incorporate quail into national animal welfare strategies?
