Adverse consequences of sanctions against Russia

to the Commission
Rule 130
Kostas Chrysogonos (GUE/NGL)
The Russian government’s decision to extend the embargo on food imports from the European Union until the end of 2017, in retaliation for the corresponding sanctions imposed by the European Union, has increased concern about the economic impact of the political decisions that have been taken[1]. The restrictions imposed by both sides are estimated to have reduced trade by over US USD 180 billion over the last three years alone. At political and military level, there has been no substantial progress which might justify the economic cost. Greek producers, farmers and stockbreeders are particularly badly affected, as Russia used to be the main destination of their exports.
In view of the above, could the Commission say:
- —How does it respond to those who emphasise the need to review the sanctions against Russia?
- —What actions will be taken to support those European citizens whose livelihoods are being destroyed because of these sanctions?
