Parliamentary questions
30 August 2016
E-006387-16
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Isabella Adinolfi (EFDD)

 Subject:  Earthquake in central Italy
 Answer(s)

On 24 August 2016, several municipalities in central Italy (Accumoli, Amatrice and Arquata del Tronto) were severely struck by a terrifying series of earthquakes which killed around 300 people and caused huge material damage.

Many buildings of historical, artistic and cultural interest were seriously affected and damaged by the earthquakes. More specifically, the Italian Ministry of Culture has identified 293 cultural assets that have been affected in the restricted area alone, of which 50 have been seriously damaged or have collapsed.

Our historical and artistic heritage plays a vital role in the formation of our identity as EU citizens and belongs to all 28 Member States. As such, it should be safeguarded and protected.

Accordingly, in view of the need to safeguard and recover the damaged assets, can the Commission answer the following questions:
Will it allocate specific aid for the protection and safeguarding of the artistic heritage, which is a common European good?
Will it regard aid for reconstruction and for securing and restoring buildings as being outside the constraints of the Stability Pact?
Will it launch specific restoration projects, also with a view to the upcoming European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018?
