In August 2016 central Italy was hit by a series of quakes whose epicentres were in the provinces of Rieti, Ascoli Piceno and Perugia. The main shock, with a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale, occurred at 3.36 in the morning of 24 August. Its epicentre was located in the Valle del Tronto, between the towns of Accumoli, Amatrice and Arquata del Tronto.

The civil protection authorities have reported 294 deaths. Two hundred and thirty people were rescued from the ruins and 388 were injured.

Given the scale of this disaster, can the Commission provide details of the EU funding allocated and disbursed and the projects put forward implemented in the 2000-2006, 2007‐2013 and 2014-2020 programming periods with a view to making at-risk buildings in the four Italian region involved (Lazio, Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo) more resistant to earthquakes?

Will it be opening in-depth investigations into whether the funds disbursed were used for their intended purpose, in particular in the areas hardest hit by the earthquakes?
