ENFIA

Question for written answer E-006763-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Manolis Kefalogiannis (PPE)

In accordance with the agreement it reached with its European partners in August 2015 and with the Third Memorandum, the Greek Government, in a bid to meet its fiscal targets, has been imposing excessive taxes on Greek citizens and is now asking them for more than they can give.

Even property owners have fallen victim to the government’s policy of overtaxation. Although the current government pledged to repeal ENFIA (the consolidated tax on property ownership, which is considered unfair by its very nature), it has instead increased it by another EUR 300 million in 2016. Since 29 August 2016, at least two million people have been receiving tax bills that are higher than they were in 2015.

— Was Greece required to increase ENFIA in 2016 under the August 2015 agreement?

— Is the European Union compelling Greece to continue imposing ENFIA, and did it ask Greece to increase the tax by a further EUR 300 million?
