Illegal quarrying in the Pentadaktylos mountains

Question for written answer E-006985-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Lefteris Christoforou (PPE)

According to reliable reports from the occupied territories of Cyprus, confirmed by Cypriot television channels, terrible damage is being done to the Pentadaktylos mountains as a result of illegal quarrying by the occupying authorities. It seems very clear that this activity has been stepped up recently, placing the entire region at risk of irreversible environmental damage.

Unfortunately, the rapacious and predatory actions of the illegal occupying authorities betray a lack of concern for principles or rules and a failure to take account of environmental damage, the human factor, or indeed the fact that the occupied Pentadaktylos mountains do not belong to them. Environmental tolerance limits in the Pentadaktylos mountains have now been reached and these illegal quarrying activities must be stopped.

The Commission is asked

— What steps will the Commission take to force the occupying authorities to end illegal quarrying in the Pentadaktylos mountains?

— How is an important part of the European environment such as the Pentadaktylos mountain range, with its unique natural beauty and immense environmental wealth, being protected from catastrophic damage?
