Language learning

Question for written answer E-007369-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Nadine Morano (PPE)

Eurostat has published a study on language learning among young Europeans to coincide with the European Day of Languages. 84% of EU primary school children were learning a foreign language in 2015, with French coming in as the second most studied language. However, the overall total hides major disparities between the Member States. Learning languages at a young age is nevertheless essential.

At a time when the French Government has abolished bilingual classes enabling pupils to learn two languages from the age of 11, what measures has the Commission taken or will it take to promote EU language learning at an early age?
