During her speech at the Conference for the EU regional policy in Bratislava in September, Corina Crețu, the Commissioner responsible for regional policy, called for flexibility and speed in the promotion of European cohesion policy.
Specifically, the Commissioner linked the progress of European cohesion policies with economic governance and structural reforms in the EU. Given the greater need for funding of Member States and regions which are lagging behind in the process of convergence, or facing a financial crisis, transferring resources from the North’s surpluses to the South’s deficits is a major challenge, particularly in countries like Greece, which, after seven years of crisis, needs momentum for sustainable development through cohesion policies.
In view of this:
- 1.What structural reforms does the Commission perceive as conditions for the funding of subsequent years, what are the areas of concern and to which direction?
- 2.Are there any data, as reported by the Commission, as regards the duration, quality and viability of the jobs created during the 2007-2013 period?
- 3.What new tools will the Commission consider to strengthen funding to peripheral countries, such as Greece, especially at a time when it faces, among other problems, the refugee issue?
