Trapped refugees

Question for written answer E-009409-16
to the Commission
Rule 130

By late October 2016, Spain had managed to process 867 asylum applications out of the 17 000 that it had received under European agreements. However, it seems that the issue of processing these applications in a quick and efficient manner has yet to be resolved.

The case of Lina, an Afghan woman and mother of two small children living in a Greek refugee camp, is one of 22 particularly sensitive cases that the Spanish Government has still not processed.

Given the death threats that she receives, against both her and her children, from the man who is both her husband and her rapist, she has asked for her application to be processed immediately.

Despite this, and although she is in a very difficult position, the Spanish Ministry of Home Affairs is procrastinating and will not expedite the procedures for the transfer of this woman and her children to safety.

1. What will the Commission do to pressure the Spanish Government into processing special cases of this type in a quick and efficient manner?

2. Could the Commission provide comparative information on Member State response time to asylum applications?
