Lack of integrative projects in the Danube Region

Question for written answer E-009673-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Daniel Buda (PPE)

The European Union strategy for the Danube Region focuses on four priority fields, namely: connecting the Danube Region, protecting the environment in the Danube Region, building prosperity in the Danube Region and strengthening this region. Thus, the strategy offers several possibilities for implementing large projects which put the strategy’s priorities into practice. In Romania it was reported that the Juncker Plan was not used and no integrative projects were achieved.

According to representatives from the Association of Romanian Advisers for Accessing European Funds, the Ministry for Regional Development and Public Administration is not willing to consider integrative projects, and there are major deficiencies regarding inter-ministerial cooperation. Another reason for the refusal to develop integrative projects arises from the fact that the concept of local development projects does not apply to the projects in the Danube Region.

As one of the objectives of this strategy is to create a common integrated circuit through which the potential of the Danube can be harnessed, what is the Commission’s recommendation to the Romanian authorities with regard to their approach to integrative projects?
