The dairy firm Lácteos Casa Macán SL, which supplies the major hypermarket chain Mercadona and is based in the municipality of Taboada (Lugo), is planning to install a new outlet from which its wastewater would be discharged into the river Enviande, a tributary of the Miño which has its source in the Serra do Faro mountains, part of the Natura 2000 network, and which flows into the Miño at the historic site of Castro Candaz behind the Belesar dam.
This firm has already been condemned by the courts in previous cases for discharging wastewater into other rivers and causing the death of animals and trees.
An irrigation association takes water from the area, and any pollution of the river could affect future water supplies for both neighbouring farms and local residents.
The river is well known for the quality of its fish and offers great potential for recreational fishing.
— Does the Commission believe that this firm’s activity is compatible with respect for areas protected under the Habitats Directive?— Should such a project not be subject to an environmental impact assessment in accordance with Directive 2011/92/EU?— What requirements would such an aggressive and highly polluting project have to meet in order to receive a positive assessment?
