Industrial policy for the renewables sector

Question for written answer E-000436-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Martina Werner (S&D)

In its Winter Package, the Commission pledges to help the EU become the global market leader in renewable energy technologies.

To make the energy transition, the EU needs a strong renewable energy industry, which supplies innovative, high-quality components for sustainable energy production. The future of the sector is promising: it has great potential for growth and is likely to be highly competitive. It also spends a lot on R&D.

Parliament has already called for a resolute industrial policy for the photovoltaic sector in its resolution of 15 December 2015 which formed part of a report (2015/2113 (INI)) entitled ‘Towards a European Energy Union’. MEPs called, among other things, for the EU to set an objective that 20% of cells and modules sold on the internal market should have been manufactured domestically.

— What industrial policy measures for the renewables sector has the Commission implemented or set in train since it took office?— How does the Commission intend to meet the target set by Parliament for the photovoltaic sector?
