Support for couples to undergo IVF
14.2.2017
Question for written answer E-001008-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Lefteris Christoforou (PPE)
For many couples who are unable for various reasons to have children IVF is the only solution.
I believe that a couple’s desire to have children is their basic right and an imperative necessity, and that society should support this moving endeavour of each couple by every possible means.
I think it should be a top priority in each State and especially the EU itself fully and adequately to support those who wish to have children. Indeed the EU has a duty for many important and vital reasons not only to support the process of IVF but to encourage childless couples in this direction.
I note that many childless couples, despite their strong desire to have children, are unable to meet the increased costs of IVF.
In the light of the above, will the Commission say:
- 1.How does it intend to provide medical and financial support and information for childless couples trying to have children through IVF?
- 2.Does any European institutional framework exist to support couples and strengthen medical infrastructure to assist such couples?
- 3.Are any EU funds available as part of support for research and the improvement of medical science in this area?
