Removal and repatriation of organs following death

Question for written answer E-001449-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Vicky Ford (ECR)

When a death occurs abroad and the law in the particular Member State where the death occurred requires the removal and retention of organs following a post mortem, the procedure to enable the repatriation of those organs can be extremely difficult for the grieving family at such a sensitive time. The situation is exacerbated if the relatives are not informed that organs have been retained, as this involves an additional lengthy and complicated process to have them repatriated.

Does the Commission have any plans to consider making any improvements regarding the repatriation of mortal remains, especially on providing better information to relatives on post mortems and the treatment of organs?
