We have recently been informed by the coordinator of the Mediterranean rail corridor that the construction of certain sections in south-east Spain, in particular the Murcia-Almería and Almería-Granada sections, has been delayed considerably.
The problem has been exacerbated by the fact that the construction project for the Almería section has lost the funding previously earmarked until 2020, and is therefore left out of the current financial framework. The Mesa del Ferrocarril de Almería (Almería Railway Board) visited Parliament to complain about the state of Almería’s rail infrastructures and the connections between Almería and Murcia and between Almería and Granada, which is causing serious problems for the future of the area’s agriculture and tourism sectors.
Following the visit and bearing in mind that the development of the Mediterranean rail corridor in Spain depends on the decisions taken by the Spanish Government:
- —Is the Spanish Government fulfilling the objectives set for the Mediterranean rail corridor with a view to its completion by 2030?
- —What is the state of play concerning the Murcia-Almería and Almería-Granada sections?
