Measures for combating sexism in education

The Department of Education in the Autonomous Region of Madrid has decided to investigate the Juan Pablo II state-subsidised private school, which is located in the municipality of Alcorcón, to verify claims of sexism regarding the school’s extracurricular activities.

This school, which separates its pupils by gender, offers some extracurricular activities that foster gender stereotypes. In reports that it published in the past, the European Institute for Gender Equality raised the fact that these sorts of discriminatory practices can still be seen in schools in a number of Member States. Furthermore, by adopting the Resolution on eliminating gender stereotypes in the EU (2012/2116(INI)), Parliament has acknowledged the lack of community and national legislation on the equality of women in education.
