New measures affecting the blackspot sea bream fishing fleet in the Bay of Cádiz

Question for written answer E-003499-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Clara Eugenia Aguilera García (S&D)

An implementing act came into force recently which sets the minimum size for sea bream in the North-West Atlantic at 33 cm (previously the minimum size was 25 cm). This measure, taken to promote stock recovery, is having a significant impact on the Bay of Cádiz blackspot sea bream fishing fleet (the ‘Voracera’ fleet), which is highly dependent on these catches and has seen how its quota has fallen.

This fleet also has to compete with other fleets that fish the same fishing ground but are not subjected to the aforementioned restrictions. The fact that this species will very shortly be included in the landing obligation makes the situation even more complicated for the vessels affected.

1. What measures has the Commission already implemented or will implement so that the EU fleet is not left to bear the full weight of the fishing ground’s recovery alone?

2. Given the strong socioeconomic impact this is having on the black spot sea bream fishing fleet, will the Commission take account of studies certifying the species’ high survival rate?
