31.5.2017
Question for written answer E-003645-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Nuno Melo (PPE)
Renewable energy generated 27.5% of the EU’s electricity in 2014, and the EU holds 30% of the world’s renewable-energy patents.
The EU has binding objectives in place for 2020, including a 20% increase in renewable energy and efficiency compared with levels in 1990. In October 2014, before the UN Climate Change Conference Paris 2015, EU leaders came to an agreement on a goal of at least 27% by 2030.
The EU imports 53% of all the energy that it consumes, at a cost of more than EUR 1 billion a day.
What measures will the Commission take to meet the binding 2020 objectives for increasing the use of renewable energy?
Will the EU make proper use of its renewable-energy patents?
