Cause of the deaths of three refugees in Moria

Question for written answer E-004100-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Ana Gomes (S&D)

During the last week of January 2017, three refugees — an Egyptian, a Syrian and a Pakistani — died at the Moria hotspot on the island of Lesbos, Greece. The official cause of these deaths is unknown, but various media reports suggest that the refugees had inhaled the fumes from makeshift stoves in their tents.

These deaths raise very serious legal and political questions, both at domestic and EU level, as to the overall management of the refugee crisis.

1. Does the Commission have more information about these deaths and their cause?

2. Did the Greek Government conduct a formal and in-depth investigation into the cause of the deaths? If so, what were the results? If not, will the Commission pressure it do so?
