State of the Monforte de Lemos medieval stone bridge

Question for written answer E-005186-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Lidia Senra Rodríguez (GUE/NGL)

The medieval stone bridge situated in the historical centre of Monforte de Lemos (Lugo) on the River Cabe, is listed as a ‘Bien de Interés Cultural-BIC’ heritage site.

Conservationists are now calling for maintenance work to be done on the bridge. In addition, they take the view that it should be reserved for pedestrians.

This is also a basic objective of the special plan for the conservation and restoration of Monforte’s historic and artistic heritage, on the grounds that the bridge is unsuited to vehicle traffic.

However, while the bridge is indeed undeniably in urgent need of repair and conservation, the Galician authorities are doing nothing to ensure that the necessary works are carried out or that the bridge is reserved for pedestrians.

In view of this:

Will the Commission now encourage the Member States signatories to the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Architectural Heritage of Europe to adopt effective measures to prevent damage to the architectural heritage?
