Galicia National Park Atlantic Islands

Question for written answer E-005187-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Lidia Senra Rodríguez (GUE/NGL)

The Atlantic Islands of the Galicia Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, comprising the archipelagos of Ons, Cies, Cortegada and Sálvora, are situated within a Natura 2000 area and include a special protection area for birds (SPA ES0000254) referred to in Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation on wild birds and Special Area of Conservation SAC ES1140004.

However, management of the park, with its valuable wildlife heritage, which is the responsibility of the Autonomous Community of Galicia, leaves much to be desired. Constant lack of staff and severe shortages of resources and equipment that are of even remotely acceptable quality on the islands of Ons, Sálvora and Cortegada are severely detracting from any efforts to conserve and maintain the wildlife heritage.

On the island of Ons, this is being compounded by sports activities that are unsuited to a particularly vulnerable area, an absence of maritime surveillance, inadequate staff to cope with mass tourism during the high season, use of volunteers to compensate manpower shortages, etc.

In view of this:

Will the Commission take action to ensure compliance with Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds, and Directive 92/43/EC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora?
