Flooding in South Asia — the impact on education

Question for written answer E-005706-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Doru-Claudian Frunzulică (S&D)

South Asia is facing the most devastating flooding to hit the continent for years, with millions of people having been displaced and a death toll estimated at more than 1 000. The flooding has also affected 18 000 schools in the region, which means that 1.8 million children have been prevented from going to classes, a significant number of whom are at risk of dropping out of the education system permanently, if education is not properly funded in the framework of relief efforts.

Does the Commission plan to take measures specifically addressing this risk? Will it deliver assistance that will contribute to allowing children to go back to school as soon as it is safe for them to do so?
