The contaminated eggs scandal

Question for written answer E-006102-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Stelios Kouloglou (GUE/NGL)
A scandal was exposed in the summer which involved eggs contaminated with fipronil in Dutch and Belgian poultry farms, despite the ban imposed by the Union on use of this insecticide for animals intended for human consumption. Actually, the World Health Organisation says the use of fipronil is ‘moderately toxic’.
This case demonstrates once again that a number of EU directives are breached by the food industry, thus putting human health at risk.
In view of this:
- 1.Is an investigation being carried out into the impact of the latest food scandal?
- 2.How does the Commission intend to improve the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF)?
- 3.How does the Commission intend to protect European consumers from future unlawful acts on the part of the food industry?
