Risk of paralysis of children due to enterovirus EV-D68

Question for written answer E-006160-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy (ALDE)
On 30 September 2017, ‘de Volkskrant’ newspaper published an article in which Dutch doctors from Groningen warned about a cold virus, called enterovirus EV‐D68, which could cause paralysis in children. As yet there is neither a treatment nor a vaccine for the virus[1]. Is the Commission aware of enterovirus EV‐D68 and the risks of paralysis associated with it?
— Will the Commission introduce a European requirement to report enterovirus EV‐D68, in order to reduce the number of children paralysed by the virus, and will it in addition launch in-depth research into the virus with the aim of developing a vaccine against it?— If so, on what time scale and if not, why not?
