Discrepancies in data on education spending in the Hungarian budget

Question for written answer E-006862-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Péter Niedermüller (S&D)

I am sure we agree that a condition for correct political decision-making is the availability of appropriate statistical data at national and EU level.

For this reason I find it surprising that, according to data published by Eurostat, in 2014 — the most recent year for which data could be accessed — Hungary’s education spending amounted to 5.2% of its GDP, whilst the Hungarian Statistical Agency put the figure at 4.3% of GDP for that year, and the OECD’s ‘Education at a Glance’ publication gave a figure of 3.8% of GDP.

How does the Commission explain this situation?
