Support for independent living for persons with disabilities

According to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, persons with disabilities are active members of society and should take effective part therein. Therefore, they must be given appropriate and necessary functional ‘tools’.

The personal assistant represents just such a ‘tool’ in the lives of disabled persons. Supporting this initiative is a crucial factor in promoting independent living for persons with disabilities. Supporting the needs of disabled persons is an aspect of European culture. There is no doubt that Greece needs to improve the social framework regarding support for disabled persons.

In view of this, the Commission is asked:

During the current planning period, what amounts have been allocated to Greece at national, regional, local and civil society level, through funding programmes to:

• —support the needs of persons with disabilities in general, and;
• —promote the development of the personal assistant system in Greece?
