Contaminated cabin air in planes

Question for written answer E-007647-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Gabriele Preuß (S&D)

Pilots have reported that the frequency of ‘fume events’ — when exhaust gases or fumes contaminate the cabin air supply in modern aircraft — is increasing. These incidents can cause crew members and passengers to feel dizzy and faint, and are therefore very dangerous. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) does not see any need for immediate action and has instead asked the Commission to conduct a study on the matter.

1. How many ‘fume events’ has the Commission been made aware of in the last 10 years?

2. Does it not see a need for swift action before, and not after, the study has been completed?

3. When can the findings of the study be expected?
