Post-Brexit budget cuts for Eastern European Member States

Question for written answer E-000773-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Răzvan Popa (S&D)

The Chancellor of Austria, Sebastian Kurz, in an interview published on Monday in the media outlet ‘Standard’, has asked for budget cuts for Eastern European Member States post-Brexit. Meanwhile last week, Romania and seven other Member States from Eastern Europe agreed to increase their allocated contributions for the next multiannual financial framework in order to cover the financial gaps left in the Union’s budget by Brexit.

1. Would the Commission be inclined to consider budget cuts — as mentioned by the Chancellor of Austria — for cohesion policy?

2. If this were the case, would these cuts only affect the cohesion policy budget for Eastern European Member States?
