Environmental Crime Directive review

Question for written answer E-001060-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Catherine Bearder (ALDE)

Objective 2.1, Action 14 of the EU’s Action Plan against Wildlife Trafficking calls for a review of the EU’s Environmental Crime Directive (2008/99/EC) in 2016. This includes reviewing the criminal sanctions applicable to wildlife trafficking throughout the EU.

Two years have passed since the Commission adopted the action plan and since then, combating environmental crime has been made an EU security priority for the 2018-2021 period.

What steps is the Commission taking to fulfil the commitment to review the Environmental Crime Directive?

When will the Commission finalise the evaluation study on the effectiveness of the directive, and what steps will follow?

Is the Commission planning to organise a public stakeholder consultation on this issue in the near future?
