Inefficiency of EU development aid in Burma: 2018 ECA report findings

According to a report published by the European Court of Auditors (ECA) on 7 February 2018[1], EU development aid to Burma, which is very substantial at nearly EUR 1 billion for the 2012-2016 period, has supported the country’s priorities well so far, but has only been partially effective.

The main reasons cited are the lack of prioritisation and coordination between the Commission directorate-generals responsible for managing development and humanitarian aid, and shortcomings in the quality of indicators and monitoring of projects, among others.

As a result, only half of the projects have produced the expected outcomes.

Is the Commission aware of this lack of coordination?

What measures will it take to rectify this, and to make the badly needed EU development aid fully effective?

Will the responsible DGs endorse the recommendations of the ECA’s report?
