Depopulation of rural areas

Question for written answer E-001590-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Gabriela Zoană (S&D)

Although efforts have been made so far, generational renewal in rural areas is far from being assured, which has a negative impact on the economies of these areas.

In rural areas, the absence of social services such as high quality education, healthcare services and infrastructure (sewage systems, running water, gas, high voltage power lines, and paved roads) mean that it is very difficult for young people to relocate, settle down and set up families there.

How does the Commission, together with the Member States, intend to solve the problem of the depopulation of rural areas?

Does the Commission plan to simplify the procedures used by local authorities to attract European funding in order to carry out infrastructure works in rural areas?
