Council Directive 91/271/EEC concerning urban waste water treatment

Rule 130
Cristian-Silviu Buşoi (PPE)

Council Directive 91/271/EEC concerning urban waste water treatment was adopted on 21 May 1991 with the aim of protecting the environment from the adverse effects of urban waste water discharges and discharges from various industrial sectors.

The Ninth Report on the implementation status and the programmes for implementation (as required by Article 17) of Council Directive 91/271/EEC, which was published on 14 December 2017, shows that compliance rates are very high in 19 Member States (in the range of 98-100%) and lower in four others (Cyprus, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Romania), where the rates are below 70%.

How does the Commission plan to strengthen its collaboration with Member States with lower compliance rates in order to increase environmental and human health protection across the EU?
