Accessibility of household appliances for visually impaired people

Question for written answer E-002001-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Renaud Muselier (PPE)

On 30 November 2017, the European Parliament passed a resolution concerning the implementation of the EU’s disability strategy.

This text sets out the main guiding principles for the disability accessibility policies. It also takes into account many aspects of daily life for disabled people, as well as their carers.

However, one area has still not been dealt with under the measures proposed: the accessibility of household appliances for visually impaired people.

In this area, there has been increasingly extensive use of digital interfaces, such as micro‐touch screens and freely rotating control knobs, meaning that these devices are inaccessible to this section of the population.

Will the Commission take legislative measures to put an end to this situation?

Could a voice-controlled version be made compulsory for each range of equipment?
