Effect of pesticides on the development of Parkinson's disease

Question for written answer E-002376-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Sophie Montel (EFDD)

A study published in the French weekly epidemiological report (Bulletin épidémiologique hebdomadaire, or BEH) shows that people living in agricultural areas are at increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. The study suggests a link between the disease and pesticide exposure, whether or not people actually work with pesticides. Entire populations in agricultural areas are thus affected.

Yet the Commission takes a lenient approach to pesticides, citing, as a pretext for its attitude, studies commissioned by the agrifood sector. The Union’s aim, enshrined in Article 39 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, is to promote high agricultural productivity.

Does the Commission believe that this agricultural productivism is compatible with public health?
