According to the English language Azerbaijani newspaper, Azernews[1], on 31 May 2018 Commissioner Oettinger led a delegation of German entrepreneurs — his fellow countrymen — on a visit to Azerbaijan for a meeting with the country’s Energy Minister. So far, this news has not been denied.
The diary of EU Commissioners’ commitments[2] shows that Commissioner Oettinger was in Azerbaijan from 30 May to 2 June in an institutional role for the Oil and Gas Conference.
Can the Commission say:
- 1.Whether it is true that Commissioner Oettinger led (or accompanied) a group of German entrepreneurs (or a German entrepreneur) to a meeting with the Azerbaijani Energy Minister, or with other ministers (or officials) of the Azerbaijani government?
- 2.If it is true, what measures would the Commission consider taking to guarantee that Commissioner Oettinger promotes the general interests of the EU, not just those of Germany? If it is not true, why has Commissioner Oettinger not denied the news published by Azernews?
- 3.Why was the Commission represented at the Oil and Gas Conference by the Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources, rather than one of the commissioners with expertise in energy matters?
