Migrant situation in Europe

Rule 130

The college of Commissioners has just adopted a proposal aiming to triple the budget dedicated to migration and the security of external borders for the period of the multiannual financial framework to reach EUR 34.9 billion.
Furthermore, the Commission has proposed to provide the Frontex agency with about 10 000 coast guards and border guards, compared to the current 1 500. In addition, EUR 4.8 billion will be shared among Member States undergoing intense migratory pressure. Lastly, EUR 10.4 million will go to an asylum and migration fund in order to assist States with asylum, integration, combating illegal immigration and the repatriation of persons not eligible for asylum.
If it does not involve fundamentally criticising these sensible measures, I urge the Commission to give its opinion on some additional proposals:
- —The creation of migrant reception centres outside the Union, in Libya, for example, strictly for humanitarian purposes;
- —Prohibiting NGO ships transiting through the Mediterranean Sea from carrying migrants to Europe with the aim of assisting illegal immigration, illegal entry and undermining public authorities.
What form would the creation, as recommended by the Commission, of an asylum agency take?
