The Centro Stampa di Gorizia [Gorizia Press Centre], owned by the Gedi Group, which prints several daily newspapers distributed locally in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of north-east Italy, such as Il Piccolo and Il Messaggero Veneto, announced at the beginning of June 2018 that the press centre would be closing. This press centre was built using public funds (local, state and European) and will now be closed after just six years.

All personnel, unless involved in an early retirement plan, will be transferred to the same group’s press centre in Padua. One employee, a print technician who had been working at the Gorizia Press Centre, took his own life following the company’s announcement of this transfer.

The two newspapers printed at the centre called a strike following this tragedy, which other national newspapers then joined.

Any corporate restructuring action deeply influences not only working conditions, but the very lives of people and their families.
