Information on preventing outbreaks of new animal diseases

Question for written answer E-003593-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Neena Gill (S&D)

Following the recent outbreak of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Bulgaria (sheep) and Bluetongue Virus in France (sheep and goats), the UK (among other countries) remains gravely concerned about the spread of new animal diseases and their impact on our animals. PPR alone has been reported to cause near catastrophic herd depletion of endangered species around the world, as seen in Mongolia, and its recent outbreak in Bulgaria represents the first occurrence of the disease in the EU.

1. What action is the Commission taking or intending to take, to prevent or manage the outbreak of new animal diseases?

2. What complementary measures could be taken at Member State level to further protect our species?
