Enforcing the renewable energy target for 2020

Question for written answer E-004379-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Esther de Lange (PPE)

According to the Commission’s progress reports[1], various Member States are not on track to reach their national energy targets under EU legislation on energy and climate. A transition to renewable energy is essential in order to make our economies sustainable and to reduce our dependence on imports from third countries.

1. Does the Commission know what progress the Member States have so far made towards the targets set for renewable energy generation in 2020?

2. Will the Commission approach Member States before that year to remind them of their obligation to achieve the targets?

3. In the period ahead, will the Commission devote greater attention to promoting arrangements for cooperation and joint projects, and providing information on the subject, if there is support for this?
