Common agricultural policy — Commission proposal to grub up 400000 hectares of vines

WRITTEN QUESTION P-3976/06
by André Laignel (PSE)
to the Commission
The Commission recently proposed a massive grubbing-up scheme involving 400000 hectares of vines over five years. In a more and more competitive world market, this will inevitably weaken EU countries' potential in this sector. Would it not be wiser to introduce measures to protect and improve vineyard terroirs, and develop marketing and exports so as to be able to compete with wine produced in non-member countries?
