Protection of workers in the new EU Member States

WRITTEN QUESTION P-5738/07
by Alexandru-Ioan Morţun (ALDE)
to the Commission

2007 is the European year of workers’ mobility, which is designed to promote a greater degree of workers' mobility in terms of sectors, qualifications and the new countries, across the EU.

Only 2 % of Europeans live in a different EU Member State from their country of origin, a situation which has remained largely unchanged over the past 30 years, despite the accession of new countries to the European Union. These people also include Romanian citizens, who unfortunately face frequent discrimination in their new place of work.

How will the Commission protect the rights of workers from the various EU Member States who are legally working in a country other than their country of origin? What measures are being taken to encourage labour mobility in order to cover the labour deficit in the old Member States?
