Measures to increase the energy efficiency of buildings

WRITTEN QUESTION P-0247/09
by Silvia-Adriana Ţicău (PSE)
to the Council
The three priority areas of the Czech Presidency’s programme are the economy, energy and the European Union in the world. The people of Europe expect the European institutions to shield them against crises and to enhance their quality of life. The European public’s current priorities are the European Union’s economic recovery plan, increasing energy efficiency and the security of energy supplies.
The European Parliament views Directive 2002/91/EC[1] on the energy performance of buildings as a priority for that mandate. With vision, political will and, above all, commitment vis‑à–vis the European public, an agreement on that directive can be reached at first reading.
Increasing the energy efficiency of buildings can enhance the quality of life of every family and dwelling in Europe through a reduction in energy consumption, lowering utility bills and improving environmental quality.
Can the Council indicate what priority is to be accorded to this matter during the Czech Presidency and what schedule has been established for the discussion and adoption of that directive in the Council?
