Living conditions and care for people with disabilities

WRITTEN QUESTION P-1188/09
by Manolis Mavrommatis (PPE‑DE)
to the Commission

The French newspaper Le Figaro reported on 13 February 2009 (page 10) that many people with disabilities are obliged to live in a neighbouring EU Member State (this is the case for 6 500 French people living in Belgium) because of a lack of facilities to assist them in daily living.

Is the Commission aware of this situation? What action is it taking so that these people do not have to move to another Member State? Is cross-border cooperation by the Member States facilitated in such cases, and in what way? Given that in many Member States the number of school-age children with disabilities is increasing, how is the Commission helping the Member States to adapt the facilities in state schools to make life easier for these children? Is there any provision for funding for this purpose?
