Parliamentary questions
30 July 2014
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Daniel Hannan (ECR)

 Subject:  Creation of wetlands in Medmerry, west of Selsey, West Sussex (UK)

— Considering Written Question E-004275/2011, submitted by Ashley Fox, MEP;

— Considering that European directives are still being cited by the UK Environment Agency as a reason for moving historic sea defences three years after this specific question was raised,

1. Can the Commission state whether there is any EU legislation applicable to Member States that imposes the creation of wetlands (i.e. deliberate flooding) in an effort to create bird habitats or for other reasons, either outright or as a condition either for the implementation of land reclamation projects or for receiving EU funding for land reclamation projects, both generally and in the particular case of Medmerry, west of Selsey, West Sussex (UK)?

2. If there is no such legislation other than the Habitats Directive, can the Commission confirm that the implementation of that directive with regard to specific projects for the creation of wetlands is entirely within the competence of the Member States?

3. Has the Commission provided any funding, through LIFE+ or through other means, for the specific project at Medmerry in West Sussex, and what are the conditions for receiving LIFE+ funding?
