Israel-Palestine conflict

to the Council
Rule 130
Nicola Caputo (S&D)
This morning Minister Mogherini spoke before the Italian Chamber of Deputies about the situation in the Middle East. She expressed pain and sorrow on behalf of the Italian Government, parliament and people for the tragic deaths which have occurred in a conflict that is ever ‘more wide-ranging, complex and dramatic than the already devastating scenario of the cyclical Middle Eastern crises seen in past decades.’
Last night, Presidential Statement S/PRST/2014/13 was issued, in which the UN Security Council unanimously called for ‘full respect of international humanitarian law’ and ‘an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire’.
Can the Council therefore answer the following questions:
- — Is the EU ready to contribute to a solution that meets the security, economic and humanitarian needs of Israelis and Palestinians, by reactivating the EU BAM Rafah mission?
- — What immediate humanitarian assistance can be offered to the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip?
- — What action will be taken, in the immediate future, to promote the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1850 (2008), in order to achieve ‘a comprehensive peace’ based on ‘a vision of a region where two democratic States, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace within secure and recognised borders’?
