Attack on Dan Adamescu and threats to fundamental rights in Romania

Question for written answer P-009385-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Syed Kamall (ECR)

I have been contacted by a constituent concerning the trial of Dan Adamescu, a German citizen, prominent businessman and newspaper proprietor operating in Romania.

My constituent tells me that Mr Adamescu faces charges of bribery and believes that the conduct of the Romanian authorities has not been consistent with standards of justice stipulated by EC law and the Copenhagen criteria.

My constituent also believes the case against Mr Adamescu may be politically motivated.

1. Is the Commission aware of the concerns surrounding this case?

2. If so, can it give details of its discussions to date, and any future discussions it will have, with the Romanian authorities over alleged violations of fundamental and civil liberties protected by EC law which are taking place in Romania?

3. Does the Commission intend to launch a ‘pre-Article 7’ procedure, as outlined in its communication on a new EU framework to strengthen the rule of law, given the allegations of abuse of the rule of law in Romania and the risk of a serious breach of EU values within the meaning of Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union?
