Combating hepatitis C

to the Commission
Rule 130
Francesc Gambús (PPE)
Over the past few weeks hepatitis C sufferers and their families have staged a number of protests, including sit-ins in various hospitals in Spain, claiming their right to receive treatment for the disease. Given that there is no unanimous stance among Member States with regard to whether or not governments should cover the full cost of such treatment:
- 1.Has the Commission been informed of the criteria used to establish the total number of patients who are to receive treatment for hepatitis C in Spain?
- 2.Is the Commission intending to promote or draw up a common position among the Member States to ensure that there is no discrimination against patients on the grounds of which Member State they come from, and that patients' access to public healthcare is not restricted because of their level of income?
