Parliamentary questions
22 January 2015
P-000909-15
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Daniel Hannan (ECR)

 Subject:  VAT exemption ceiling
 Answer(s)
In the light of the new European VAT rules that have come into force as of 1 January 2015, the low growth — and in some cases the contraction — of Member States’ economies, and Commissioner Ansip’s stated goals for the digital economy in the EU, the Commission is asked to answer the following:
1. Is it aware of the detrimental effects that the change in VAT rules will have on micro‐businesses in the UK and the EU, specifically companies in the digital market, and of the fact that it is making their business unviable, which is entirely contrary to the Commission’s own plans to revitalise the digital economy in the EU?
2. Is it aware that these new rules, specifically the scrapping of VAT ceilings, are confronting small businesses with immediate additional tax burdens of over 25%, effectively bankrupting them and thus stifling competition in favour of the already vested larger companies?
3. Does the Commission plan to take any measures to correct these atrocious effects?
