Implementation of the refugee relocation scheme in Italy

Question for written answer P-001833-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Elisabetta Gardini (PPE)

On 10 February 2016 the Commission published a report on progress in implementing the European Agenda on Migration. Under the relocation scheme, a target 39 600 migrants over a two-year period was set for Italy. However, over the past four months, only 279 refugees (0.7% of that total) have been relocated, despite the fact that during that period other Member States pledged to take 966 (itself a number that falls far short of what is required). If we carry on at this speed, it will take more than 47 years to relocate the 39 600 refugees.

1. Why does the Commission think the relocation process is going so slowly in Italy?

2. What steps will it take to make sure that the scheme becomes fully operational in the next few months, given, in particular, that more people will be arriving in the summer?

3. How many people does it think will be relocated from Italy over the next four months?
